Much Ado About Uniben gate killings
.... Nemesis? or...?
By: Oriaifoh Godwins.
On Sunday 10th May 2026, the people of Edo State, and indeed Nigerians and the world at large, received with rude shock the barbaric murder of a student called Alex Omoijiate, a University of Benin student who was said to have just finished writing his exams.
When I saw the lifeless bullet riddled body of the guy, sitting behind the steering of the Mercedes GLK vehicle, the first thing that came to my mind is: "What a wicked world !". How can anybody do this to a fellow human?
Hours later, the social media was awash with how quiet and easy going, the guy was, some persons expressed same sentiment that I expressed, the first time I saw the video, but the following day, stories behind the killings began to emerge.
I have been telling those that care to listen, that; "every action definitely has an equal and opposite reaction", but many think it's just a 'stray talk'; however, the stories that followed the cause of the sordid shooting, again proved me right.
A colleague of mine, in the Fourth Estate of the realm, Eben Enasco, of Silver Rhythm 93.7 FM News, dug further, and unravelled that, a deal of 90 million naira, a whopping 90 million naira! was the cause of the attack that unfortunately led to the death of the guy, in which another lady, also unfortunately lost her life in the incident as two others, were hospitalized.
The attack on that guy was a fallout of what some call "yahoo business". So if I may ask, " Is 90 million naira worth exchanging for your life?
Many people that think they are smart, and can use others to achieve their sick, selfish interests, should be reminded that, Nemesis is real...and for those that spilled the blood of another, for whatever reason, should be reminded that, at the appointed time, your own blood will be spilled. There will be no escape. What you sow, is what you will eventually reap. When the repercussions come, because it will eventually come, then people will begin to express sympathy, saying; "oh, this very quiet and gentle guy", "oh, what a wicked world".... No one will know that, they also spilled blood in the past. NEMESIS!
Ebeh Enasco, reported that; "...In the meantime, the Chairman of the University’s anti-cult committee, Venerable Egbenusi, has resigned".
According to Enasco, "In a statement obtained, he alleged the Vice Chancellor to have threatened him to delete video clips of the incident of the Cutlass chase pre the shooting at the main gate".
"Egbenusi said he sent clips of suspected cult activity to the VC hours before a man was shot dead at the main gate on Sunday. He sent more clips after the killing".
"He claims the VC called, minutes later, demanding the videos be deleted within five minutes, and threatened to evict him from the Chapel Vicarage".
"Egbenusi said he refused, insisting evidence must be preserved for investigation. He called the VC’s actions an “assault on the office of the University Chaplain.”
This, eventually led to the resignation of Egbenusi. What exactly was the authority of the University trying to sweep under the carpet?
The action of the Chairman of the University’s anti-cult Committee, Venerable Egbenusi, though, very unlike a typical Nigerian Public office holder, must be commended. His action is highly commendable.
