Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, Practitioners, Begin Visitations To Traditional Rulers, LGA's

On Wednesday 9th July 2025, the Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, TMB, kick-started in Oredo local government area, a stakeholders' meeting that will take place in all the local government areas of Edo state.

Speaking at the gathering of the stakeholders that held at Urokpota hall, the Chairman, Edo state Traditional Medicines Board, High Chief Abudu Ugbesia, JP, said; "...our presence here, is not merely procedural, it is a deliberate act of respect and recognition of the traditional Council, that forms the very foundation of our heritage, values, and identity as a people..."

The Chairman continued by pointing out that, at time like this, where the relevance of traditional knowledge systems, including medicine, is getting global recognition, the Board is seeking endorsement and serious collaborations with relevant and critical stakeholders for their endorsement of the Board's planned activities across the three Senatorial districts...". 

Continuing, he said, TMB also seek support in mobilizing community practitioners and associations, and continuous collaborations to rid traditional medicines practices in Edo state, of negative perceptions such as fetism and unsafe practices.

In a chat with newsmen after the event, Chief Dr. Abudu Ugbesia said; "Edo State Traditional Medicine Board, is rebranded. The purpose of today's meeting is to create awareness about what Edo state tradomedical Practitioners stand for. The practitioners treats the sick but God heals". 


"We are not ritualists, and we should not in any way be associated with any ritual killings or any such obnoxious practices". 


The Chairman also used the opportunity to call on all traditional medicine practitioners in Edo state, to register with the Board, and pay the necessary registration fees, saying; "...anyone that contraveness this gentle appeal, if caught, will face the penalty of a jail term or payment of two million naira".


Governor Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo state, he said, is doing a lot to create enabling environments for the people of Edo state. As such, he said, the governor of Edo state, as such, he must be supported in his effort to reposition Edo state. 


The Chairman of Edo state Traditional Medicine Board, concluded by announcing that the stakeholders meeting will also come up in all the other local government areas of Edo state, saying; Egor Uhumwode will be visited on Friday, 11th July 2025.
