CELEBRATING DISHONOURABLE HONOURABLES
…our albatross in Edo state
By: Oriaifoh Godwins
Honourable, is the quality of being honoured and having a good name,
pureness, purity, respect, accolades, laurels, awards, etc. the title
‘honourable’, is a tangible symbol that signifies approval, or
distinction.
In view of the above, the title ‘honourable’, is expected to show and
prove to the whole world that the person that bears it, is of a good
name and character; he/she must be a trusted individual of impeccable
character. Unfortunately however, in Nigeria, the title is being used
by politicians, and I must say that, it has been so rubbished,
corrupted and bastardised that no right thinking person that truly and
earnestly deserves the title will happily allow himself to be
addressed as ‘honourable’ this, or honourable that.
In Nigeria, particularly in Edo state, most people that are addressed
by the title, are those that openly and brazenly support impunities,
executive rascality, brigands, undue processes, thuggery and all the
likes. Yet, they are openly addressed as honourables.
In Nigeria, particularly in Edo state, it appears we have our own
definition for the title ‘honourable’ because, a good number of those
that have ruined our economy, people’s lives and sabotaged due process
in the emergence of genuine people to mount the helm of affairs to put
right the wrongs in our society, are the same people that we celebrate
and honour.
For example, what is honourable about those so called honourable
members that lied to the Senate committee on the process that led to
the charade so called Edo state House of Assembly, EDHA, inauguration
that was conducted on the 17th of June? They can also educate the world
on what is honourable about their use of thugs that were backed up by
the police that intimidated, harassed and assaulted members elect at
the Golden Tulips Hotel in Benin city. They need to educate the
civilized world on what is honourable about subjecting themselves to a
midnight inauguration of a law making body, as if they were being
initiated into some secret society. An inauguration is not a
confidential or secret activity; rather, it a ceremonial phenomenon
that attracts people from outside the shores of the state and it is
well attended and celebrated; but, our ‘honourables’ turned it to a
caricature and turned Edo state to a laughing stock amongst the comity
of civilized states, yet some, because of the benefits they gain from
the so called inauguration, applauded the perpetrators of the act.
Pity!
In view of the foregoing, It is high time we begin to address the so
called honourables and those that orchestrated the conduct of the so
called inauguration of Edo state House of Assembly, their real titles
other than the title ‘honourable’.
