EDO 2020:
POLITICIANS ON THEIR MARKS, GETTING SET….
By: Oriaifoh Godwins
As the Edo political banana is getting rotten, some people are
jubilating thinking it is getting ripe. How soon such people forget
where we were before Adams Oshiomhole became the governor of Edo
state, and where he left Edo state at the end of his tenure in office.
May I begin by making it clear that, I am not a fan of Oshiomhole,
neither do I have anything against Godwin Obaseki, his successor; but,
if we must move on to greater heights as a people, we must embrace the
truth and disallow politicians from deceiving us.
The ‘red roof’ revolution in our public schools across the three
Senatorial districts of the state, the nylon tile roads, and its
accompanying gutters and drainage systems, the roads in major cities
with street lights,…just to mention a few, as there are several
others, are all Oshiomhole’s legacies. What has happened to all these?
Are there continuation of same, a fall in the standard of new ones, or
there are no new ones at all?
If it is true that we still have some dilapidated schools in Edo
state, then, it is the duty of Oshiomhole’s successor to do the
needful by following the example his predecessor laid down; even if he
were to make them ‘green, or blue roofs’ so as to distinguish them
from his predecessor’s!
We all know that, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole started from zero level and
he took the state to a high level. Just like the General Hospital in
Benin, was built during his tenure; unfortunately, the same hospital
is what is being criticized today by wailers…some say the hospital was
not equipped. Okay, shouldn’t his successor be responsible for
equipping the hospital, as government is a continuum? The banana is
for sure getting rotten! Edo people should therefore pick out the
rotten banana today, so as to avoid a situation where we may tomorrow
begin to ask ourselves, ‘how did we get here’?
The fact that, some Nigeria politicians are crooks is obvious, but
again, when the people choose the path of silence, they pay the
agonizing price. Therefore, to avoid this from happening, we must
speak out now, and ensure that we put right the wrongs in our
political journey as a people.
We must all recall that, most of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s projects
were executed during his first tenure, and these were the projects
that he campaigned with to secure his second tenure. Again, after his
second tenure, he projected Mr. Godwin Obaseki to succeed him, and Edo
people bought the idea, after he successfully convinced us that his
developmental strides will be continued by his successor, Obaseki, and
more importantly, that, Obaseki was incidental to his achievements as
the head of the Economic team during his administration. But, today,
the people of Edo state, need to open back the pages of the landmark
book of Mr. Obaseki, has he been able to do anything near what his
predecessor did in his first tenure, compared to what the former did?
What has Governor Obaseki so far done that have imparted on the lives
of the people in terms of the ease of movement within the state,
provision of portable water, electricity, etc? These, and more, are
the questions that many are asking and they need urgent answers.
Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in a recent statement on the upcoming Edo
gubernatorial election, said his second tenure is not negotiable:
however, responding to him on this, Hon. Samson Osagie, an All
Progressives Congress, APC, member, and a one time member of the House
of Representatives, said; “…second tenure, is not Obaseki’s
birthright”. The ambition of Mr. Godwin Obaseki to secure a second
term ticket, has successfully fractionized the Edo APC, with
Obaseki/Shuaibu Movement, OSM, on the side of Obaseki securing a
second tenure ticket, while the Edo Peoples Movement, EPM, giving
Obaseki a No-No answer.
The election umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission,
INEC, will soon blow the ‘go ahead’ whistle, and then, the primary
election that will showcase the flag bearers for the different
political parties will emerge. For the APC, only the incumbent
governor, Mr. Obaseki, is so far showing green light of contesting
under the auspices of the All Progressives Congress, even though, many
have been insinuating that, he is going to be faced with very powerful
contenders like Captain Hosa Igunbor, an international business man,
and a multi millionaire, General Charles Airhirbhere, Rtd. who also
contested in the primary election that Obaseki emerged as winner, Dr.
Pius Odubu, the immediate past governor of Edo state, amongst others.
The Edo primary election, for the governorship position, will sure be
a very interesting one in that, the same leaders that Mr. Obaseki
tagged beggars, who he accused of always coming to him to ask for Edo
common wealth to be shared to them, are the same people that the wake
and see governor, will eventually look up to, for support and
endorsements.
Again, the same constituencies whose representatives he schemed out in
the inauguration process, are the same he will go to canvas for votes,
and he will also ask the 14 elected members, who he intimidated out of
Edo state, and who are currently taking refuge in Abuja, to vote for
him, or canvas votes for him. The Edo 2020 gubernatorial election will
sure be an interesting one.
“The banana is for sure getting rotten! Edo people should therefore
pick out the rotten banana today, so as to avoid a situation where we
may tomorrow begin to ask ourselves, ‘how did we get here’?”
