Senatorial Election, Litmus Test For Gov. Okpebholo and 3.5M votes promised

FEATURE: Senatorial Election, Litmus Test For Gov. Okpebholo and 3.5M votes promised - Implications and impact of Direct Primary Vs consesus, Written by:  Esezobor Izibili, Esq.  Events are gradually climbing to crescendo with respect to the upcoming 2027 Presidential election, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive, tacitly asking Senatorial aspirants to go to their Governors for endorsement, has shifted power from the National Working Committee, NWC to the state Governors, and Re-enacted a Direct Primary in line with the Electoral Act. The State Working Committee (SWC) Consensus candidate/s, (in a situation where forms are purchased by the aspirants) now needs governors' blessing as well as all aspirants’ written consent. Per vide the directive, if one aspirant refuses consent to the process, the governor must run a Direct Primary to validate the process. In essence, President Tinubu's  statement, suggesting that aspirants should go back to their governors for endorsem...

Tenebe could deprive Tinubu from winning Edo election

Tenebe could deprive Tinubu from winning Edo election By Tony Erha Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, had often declared that the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will deliver 3.5 million winning votes for the reelection bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the 2026 Edo presidential election. But, numerous political observers, APC opponents, who dismissed it as thoughtless and unrealistic gaffe, also tendered it a cheap political talk.  But, to many persons, Okpebholo, the ‘homeboy’ from a once rustic Udomi village, in Esan Central Local Government Area of the state, there is a somehow supernatural demeanor to his reticence, endurance and predictions. And long after he made the 3.5 million presidential votes’ expectation, things seemed to have been tilting to the prediction, when Edo followers of opposition parties, have been trooping to cross over to APC. But, many observers of Edo slippery politics believe that it was too early to predict Tinubu's...

A Critical Response to the Removal of Certificate Forgery as Grounds for Election Petitions.

OPINION: A Critical Response to the Removal of Certificate Forgery as Grounds for Election Petitions. By: Tony Ewaleifoh Introduction “Animal Farm, oh Animal Farm…”—a poetic warning that power, once unchecked, rewrites its own rules. The reported removal of certificate forgery as a ground for election petitions represents more than a legislative adjustment. It signals a dangerous shift in Nigeria’s democratic philosophy—from truth as a foundation to truth as a negotiable element. Legitimacy Without Integrity: Democracy is not sustained by ballots alone. It is sustained by trust. When individuals can ascend to power under questionable or falsified credentials—and citizens are stripped of the legal means to challenge them—the system ceases to function as a mechanism of accountability. Instead, it becomes a structure that protects outcomes, regardless of process. The Rise of Untouchable Leadership When truth is no longer enforceable, a new class of leadership emerge—one insulated fr...

Oshiomhole in a fight between the Elephant and the Pit

Oshiomhole in a fight between the Elephant and the Pit  BY TONY ERHA  'Okuo imose", "no fight is attractive" - all fights are ugly, according to the Edo people. If a fight doesn’t pluck the teeth it would drip the noise of red blood. That is why pundits were apprehensive and had to caution Dangote Refinery and the Petrol and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) to a sound reasoning, over the sack of 800 of its workers by Dangote, which was followed by a strike action that was later called-off. The fisticuff was intensified as the National Union of Petroleum and Gas Workers of Nigeria (NUPENG), joined the spat by supporting PENGASSAN. Like the American freestyle wrestling, where partakers fight with anything they lay their hands upon, a melee, a-free-for-all in which no one seems to know the real opponents. The fallout of the Dangote and PENGASSAN fight has unsettled Nigerians. The Benins would say "ama re fi ekpa arie gb' ihue"; ...

This Is Unconstitutional, Offends Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers

OPINION Asking EFCC , Police and Others  Who Oppose in Court  the Bail of Citizens to Verify Sureties in a Bail Process is Unconstitutional and Offends the Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers  By:Douglas Ogbankwa Esq  The Judiciary in Nigeria should realise that they are the  custodians of the Law and as such they do not adjudicate on matters  based on how they feel about a matter or how they feel about  a person, but based on what the Law say .The law is clear that there must be an unassailable level of fairness and independence in the judicial process . The incessant action of some Federal High Court Judges that ask the Prosecutor, who opposed the bail  in their Courts in criminal cases, who are parties to the Matter before the Court to verify sureties of the Defendants granted  is unconstitutional. It defeats the ends of justice and hands over the fate of Citizens affected to their enemies. It is like the National Judicial Council asking...

The Illegality of imposing Civil Servants as Sureties in Nigeria.

The Illegality  of imposing Civil Servants as Sureties in Nigeria.  By: Douglas Ogbankwa Esq.  The Nigerian Courts and some Security  Agencies are in the practice of imposing high ranking civil  servants as sureties in criminal  matters. This practice with all due respect to my Lords, their Worships, their Honours and the head of security agencies does not conform  to the extant law on the matter in Nigeria. A cursory  look at *Sections 158 to 166 of the Administration  of Criminal Justice Act  2015*,which are relevant sections in the Administration  of Criminal Justice Law of States, shows that sureties as provided by the laws, should be blood relatives of the defendants. While the law made references to blood relatives specifically, there is no portion where it mentioned civil servants or house owners, with certificates of occupancy. This practice which is very obnoxious and unacceptable has led to the unwarranted detention  ...

Our Judiciary Can Be Better

Our Judiciary Can Be Better By: Douglas Ogbankwa Esq., Statement Issued By the Vanguard for the Independence of the Judiciary on the 2025/2026 Legal Year 1. We welcome My Noble Lords, Learned Silks, Seniors, and Learned Colleagues to the 2025/2026 Legal Year. 2. Often, as an institution and profession, we fail to reflect on the happenings of the preceding Legal Year, which prevents us from identifying our shortcomings. 3. It is essential to include a review session of the previous year as part of the activities during the Opening of the Legal Year, enabling us to make meaningful projections for the new Legal Year. 4. The judiciary has not fully embraced technology to solve simple problems. In the 21st century, some courts still require people to physically visit to confirm court sittings. A simple text message indicating court adjournments and new hearing dates would resolve this issue. 5. Indigent litigants face challenges accessing virtual court sittings due to the lack of embedded v...

BBIGN National President, Chides ADC ...says Ameachi, Atiku, ElRufai are jokers, have nothing to offer By: Oriaifoh Godwins The National President of Bridge Builders Initiative for Green Nigeria, BBIGN, Dr. Emmanuel Chigoziri Orgu, on Saturday 23rd August 2023, during the South-South Summit and inauguration of the Executive members of the group, and event that held in Urokpota Hall, Benin city, condemned the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as a group of persons that has nothing to offer the country as they have earlier ruled Nigeria, but did nothing saying; "...even now, they have nothing to offer, other than their deceits and lies". Speaking, Dr. Chigoziri said; "Obasanjo said it was Atiku that led him into conceding Bakasi to Cameroon, and even called Atiku 'ole'. I guess you know what the name 'ole' means in Yoruba language"? "If Atiku becomes the President of Nigeria, he may decide to concede Rivers State to Guinea-Bissau". Dr. Chig...

Each Accident Victim Families, Deserve N20 Million Compensation From Dangote

Each Accident Victim Families, Deserve N20 Million Compensation From Dangote By: Peter Omonua Dangote trailers have done lots of damages to the lives of many people and families in Edo State. Incidences of Dangote trailers and their killings all over the country have been ongoing for years without accountability.  A few years ago, one of his trailers killed 16 people on the spot at Ketu Alapere bus stop. The victims were so fatally crushed that they were unrecognizable. On my visit to the Ikeja General hospital at that time, to identify one of the casualties; it was only by the ring on one of the fingers that i could tell it was our relative. Their faces were totally mangled.  Within a few weeks after that incidence, it was again reported that another Dangote trailer had killed 10 more people, and that the driver of the vehicle ran away after the incidence. When these murders happen, there is usually outcry from deceased families, which soon dies down with nothing coming out o...

A CAN of Worms... ... Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Focus

OPINION A CAN of Worms... ... Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Focus  By: Douglas Ogbankwa Esq. @douglasogbankwa@gmail.com. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is the body that comprises all Christian Bodies in Nigeria. In the real sense , if you were to dissect some , not all churches in Nigeria , you will see "A CAN of Worms". Firstly , I want to say there are true Men of God out there , but some are actually "god of men" .These are the real problems  . The Poverty in Nigeria created hardship for a lot of people, Many people actually saw a fledging "industry" in church business; these are the money conscious Pastors talking about man robbing God , every Sunday, when it is actually they that rob God.The other day a Gen Z Pastor asked where are  the children of one of the revitalists of Nigerian Christianity , who established  a church that a fore runner of the mega churches of today .That same Gen Z Pastor has been involved of sexcapades ...

Nigeria Favours the Shallow Over the Deep,Intelligence Also Matters .

Nigeria Favours the Shallow Over the Deep, Intelligence Also Matters. By: Douglas Ogbankwa Esq. The Super Falcons got 100k dollars for winning the WAFCON, but a Police Man or Police Officer has served the country for 35 years and gets 2 million Naira or less . There are many young Nigerians who are investing in IT, infrastructure, yet got no support from the government.  The owners of Futtetwave and Paystack relocated the headquarters of their businesses to South Africa. The Nigerian  Government did not ask why or even encourage them to cone back.  Pfizer and Glaxco Smith kline left Nigeria, no questions from the Nigerian Government.  Do you know how much 100k dollars will do to a start up? Do you know how many start-ups are looking for seed funds? We, however, choose to give it to footballers when there are many businesses struggling for survival.  The empowerment programmes are shrouded in secrecy and mystery. I have not seen one person who is a beneficiary....
