KENYAN WOMEN CELEBRATES LEGALISATION OF POLYGAMY

WOMEN IN KENYA CELEBRATE AS GOVERNMENT LEGALIZES POLYGAMY A new law that went into effect in Kenya this week makes it legal for a man to marry as many women as he wants. And a leading women’s group is applauding it. President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the polygamy measure into law Tuesday, formally recognizing what has long been a cultural practice in the nation. Parliament passed the bill in March despite protests from female lawmakers who angrily stormed out of the late-night session at the time. The bill initially allowed the first wife the right to veto the husband’s choice of additional spouses. Male members of parliament successfully pushed to get that clause dropped. “Marriage is the voluntary union of a man and a woman whether in a monogamous or polygamous union,” Kenyatta said in a statement. “The Marriage Act 2014 defines various types of marriages including monogamous, polygamous, customary, Christian, Islamic and Hindu marriages.” No limit on number of wives The l

OPEN GOVT: LESSONS FROM THE NIGERIA SENATE

OPEN GOVERNMENT : LESSONS FOR THE NIGERIAN SENATE By:Tony Iredia Last week, the Nigerian Senate decided to bar the media from reporting sessions of the current budget defence by certain public bodies. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye was quoted to have said that ‘sensitive issues cannot be discussed in the presence of press men.’ He reasons that the media coverage of the defence sessions would constitute a distraction adding that at the end of the sessions, the media would be told what was discussed. Like the average Nigerian politician who believes only his class deserves to be trusted with sufficient patriotism, Adeyeye wants the media to be kept away from serious national issues and be told only what is supposedly safe for public consumption. The Senator was no doubt in grievous error because if his reasoning was that bad journalists could collect brown envelopes and distort the story of how the budget defence went, bad legisla

OPINION: NORTHERN NIGERIA, LEECHING ON THE SOUTH

NORTHERN NIGERIA LEACHING ON THE SOUTH (PART 1) By Peter Omonua I was talking with a family friend recently. His relative, who is from one of the South-South states, works with a major federal government agency. The person has worked with this organization for about 30 years, during which period, he rose to the position of a Deputy General Manager (DGM). About 4 years ago, the person received instructions, from “above” to employ a certain young graduate, and was mandated to bring the new hire in at the position of an Assistant Manager. Officially, the expected level for a new graduate should be entry level position. Within four short years, this new hire was promoted so rapidly that he attained the same level of DGM, that which took my friend’s relation 30 years to attain. As we speak, I learnt there is a new position that has just opened up for a General Manager within the organization. This young, 4-years experience employee is being considered for the General Manager
